Native Tree Planting for Earth Day

  • Palms Native Tree Planting Project (map)

Join Los Angeles Climate Reality Project and celebrate Earth Day 2025 with a native tree planting event as part of the Los Angeles Day of Service!

The City of Los Angeles Community Forest Advisory Committee, working with the City Forest Officer and the Los Angeles Urban Forestry Division has selected this site for a pilot project to plant native tree species that have not been traditionally used as street trees.  Our local biodiversity is in crisis.  Using native species as street trees is an effective measure to bring more ecosystem health to our urban forest while also increasing street tree canopy to offset the urban heat-island effect.

Come help us plant these great local trees–some so rare you probably have never seen them.  There will also be an opportunity to sign up for the establishment watering team–a once-a-month task where you can help these trees become successfully established and watch them develop.  This is your chance to contribute something that will last for generations, as some of our native trees live for hundreds of years!

Using Biology to Help Fight Fire? An Exercise In Dialogue | Connecting Genetics to Climate

Our local community has been ravaged by extreme wildfires that are exacerbated by climate change. Moving forward, it will be necessary to consider many possible options to prevent the excessive physical destruction, loss of life and economic calamity that we have collectively suffered. Researchers are working on a wide variety of solutions that could potentially mitigate these devastating impacts. How do we, as a community, participate in conversations about high-level technical approaches BEFORE they are developed, deployed and implemented?

In this interactive workshop, we’ll learn together how to engage in productive dialogue that allows us to make difficult decisions amidst uncertainty. Facilitators will lead attendees through a case study looking at technical approaches to enhancing resilience to climate change-induced wildfire. Our small group discussions will focus on how to ask insightful questions about technologies, how to share and understand risks, benefits, uncertainties and trade-offs, and how to get decision-makers and technical experts to listen, and be responsive, to our collective concerns.
