Waste is an often overlooked part of our climate crisis. Our June chapter meeting dove into this topic with a Climate Movers & Shakers interview with Tracie Onstad Bills, Executive Director of the California Resource Recovery Association (CRRA).
CRRA is the largest state recycling organization in the country. The non-profit is dedicated to achieving environmental sustainability through zero-waste strategies, including waste prevention, reuse, recycling, and composting.
Tracie has been in the Environmental and Resource Material Management Field for over 28 years, working for a hauler, municipality and consulting firms. Her expertise spans across many services including commercial recycling, organics programs, environmental purchasing, zero waste events, and climate inventory compilation.
In addition to her role at CRRA, Tracie works at HDR Engineering where she works on building recycling and composting facilities and designing and implementing zero-waste programs. She is also a member of the National Recycling Coalition (NRC), Northern California Recycling Association (NCRA), Zero Waste San Diego, and the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).
During the interview, Tracie discussed producer accountability, the progress being made to improve recycling in California, and how behavior change is one of the biggest challenges to improving waste management.
