Major Victory at Murphy Drill Site
March 2023
On January 14th, The Climate Reality Project, including Climate Reality Los Angeles, co-sponsored a Teach-In at the Murphy Drilling Site. Over 85 impacted residents and activists showed up in the pouring rain to call out environmental injustice and ensure that East and South L.A. receive the same protections and safeguards against the effects of fossil fuel extraction already afforded to West L.A.
We want to share a very exciting and encouraging update about the Murphy Drill Site -- the City ordered E&B Natural Resources to enclose and electrify the site! There's also a litany of additional requirements laid out by the City Council.
This City Council's decision was the result not only of the Teach-In, but of countless testimonies, public comments, petitions, marches, and protests.
While this is a major victory for the community and neighbors, the oil company has until March 15th to appeal and will likely appeal.
Our Chapter and The Climate Reality Project will continue to fight against environmental injustice and increased protections for the community from the harms of adjacent fossil fuel extraction.
