GREEN BUILDINGS COMMITTEE
LA and Long Beach Endorse South Coast AQMD Clean Appliance Standards
Momentum is building for clean appliance standards at the South Coast AQMD.
March 12, 2025
The Long Beach City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve a resolution in support of proposed zero-emission HVAC and water heater rules at the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD). This comes a week after the Los Angeles City Council overwhelmingly approved a similar resolution. These resolutions passed thanks to organizing by Sierra Club and other local climate activists.
The city resolutions come as comments from individuals and organizations in favor of strong clean appliance standards have flooded SCAQMD, strongly outnumbering opposition to the rule, which has been relatively muted since staff released a new compromised version of the proposal last month.
LA Climate Reality and other supporters of the rules are sending a memo to SCAQMD staff and board members this week outlining our recommendations to strengthen the rules. You have an opportunity to uplift our comments and continue momentum for an equitable transition to clean residential space and water heating by participating in SCAQMD’s next Stationary Source Committee meeting on March 21, or sending a written comment.
