The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) is responsible for bringing air quality up to EPA standards for 18 million people across four counties. The region is in extreme nonattainment with federal standards, meaning our air quality is nowhere near healthy levels.

This unhealthy air has consequences — it contributes to breathing and heart ailments, and even reproductive issues, cancer, and premature death. But AQMD has been moving too slowly, delaying important votes on cleaning up pollution at the ports and setting stricter pollution standards for new water and space heating appliances.

To express the importance of clean air and our frustration with these delays, members of Los Angeles Climate Reality Project joined a coalition of environmental justice and clean air advocates for a “Rally for Clean Air” on December 6 at AQMD’s headquarters in Diamond Bar.

With AQMD’s board meeting beginning at 9am, clean air advocates started to gather at the AQMD entrance by 8am, enjoying breakfast burritos and warm drinks, before starting the rally at about 8:30.

The theme of the rally was the health impacts of air pollution, with people writing holiday cards and making Christmas ornaments for loved ones who have gotten sick or passed away due to ailments exacerbated by our region’s poor air quality.

After the rally, advocates joined the audience for the meeting, supporting representatives giving public comment about appliance, port, and industrial pollution.

The success of the rally will be judged over the coming months as we see if AQMD follows through on their responsibility to reduce pollution from these sources.
