Climate Curricula Committee

The Climate Curricula Committee meets the second Saturday of the month at 2pm.

The committee is focused on bringing climate literacy and environmental justice education to all subjects and grade levels in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The committee was successful in passing a climate literacy resolution with the LAUSD school board in February of 2022. With the passing of the resolution, over a half-a-million students, 30,000 teachers and over 1000 K-12 schools will be reached. Please join the committee’s work of implementing the resolution.

The Climate Curricula Youth Action Committee is in reorganization. Here’s why. More parts of the District are being drawn in to work on the issues of climate education as mandated by the Climate Literacy Resolution #016-21/22 that we originated in February 2022.

Statewide and national organizations that we introduced to the District are now in regular contact with them. So, what is our role now? What can we do to advance and deepen climate education for our youth?  How can we best help the Climate Champions teachers in every grade and subject be leaders and easily provide resources to other teachers in their schools?

We need your expertise, time, resources and ideas.

Here are several avenues to consider for your participation and involvement in advancing Climate Literacy in all subjects and schools in the LAUSD:

  • The District Facilities division is in the midst of compliance with the Clean Energy Resolution of 2019, (which LA Climate Reality Project originated, together with others.) It is also responsible for Clean Water and Air Conditioning in all schools, some of which do not have them. There is a lot of federal money available. Climate Reality Project has a national campaign to get youth involved in getting districts to use this money. How can student climate education support and benefit from this ongoing work?

  • The District Facilities is also focused on greening campuses in compliance with the Green Schools for All Resolution (which a broad coalition including several of our partners originated.) Efforts to get kids out into those and other green spaces is fundamental to good climate education and relieving trauma. TreePeople is a powerful community ally to these efforts, working in over 200 schools. How can this work be promoted, deepened, and equalized for communities oppressed by the lack of greenspace and incorporated with school gardens, regenerative agriculture, social-emotional learning and outdoor education?

  • The Adult Education and the Career and Technical Education Academies, together with the UTLA have a focus on green jobs. We know that a desirable job prospect stabilizes some of the uncertainty that youth feel, so green jobs can help social-emotional wellness.

  • District Division of Instruction leaders, through their relationship with ECCLPs (the UC/CSU organization working on climate education) are beginning to understand that students need to focus on the intellectual and emotional work, the discussions and projects, around our understanding of the Earth, work that teachers of the sciences and humanities is learning how to do. There is a lot of money in Arts education this year. How can our group help grow these deeply democratic discussions and socially influential projects.

  • Outreach and organization is needed for youth and parents eager to be involved in implementation of this work at their schools and designation of Climate Champions at their schools.

  • Climate Champions need support and easily accessible resources/data base for their schools, grades and subjects.

This is A LOT. Help by doing three things:

  1. Contact us with your thoughts, ideas and interest in working on any of the above

  2. Come to the meeting on September 14

  3. Bring others to join you at the meeting.

Let’s begin the next steps to expedite implementation of the work we started with the Climate Literacy Resolution for our students.

We look forward to your much needed help!
